Set up wholesale prices for your trade customers

Steps for

A buyer's prices come from a price list, and a customer group decides who sees it. This guide sets up both, then adds your buyers and checks what they see. For the ideas behind it, see Key concepts.

Before you start

  • SparkLayer installed on your store. On Shopify, see Install SparkLayer on Shopify. On other platforms, see Platforms.
  • A unique SKU on every product you sell to B2B customers, and the product set to active. Prices are matched to products by SKU.
  • Your trade prices, or the rule for them, for example 20% off your retail prices. A spreadsheet of prices by SKU is fine.
  • An email address you can sign in to, to test as a buyer.

Set it up yourself

Create a price list

This is step 1 of the Setup checklist: see Set up a price list. Give it a name your team will recognise, such as "Trade GBP", and pick its Currency with care: you can't change the Handle or Currency later. See Create a price list. Take the 1-minute tour.

Add your trade prices

Choose how the list gets its prices:

If your trade prices are…Do this
A set percentage off retailTick Enable automatic pricing, choose a Pricing source and enter the percentage. See Set up automatic pricing.
Exact prices in a spreadsheetSave it as a CSV file with SKU and Price columns, then click Upload next to the list. See Upload prices by CSV.

Upload prices without tax. SparkLayer shows prices net and adds tax at checkout: see step 5.

Assign the price list to a customer group

This is step 2 of the Setup checklist: see Assign a price list to a customer group. To give every B2B customer these prices, use the Base customer group. To give them to some customers only, create a customer group for them. See Assign price lists. Take the 1-minute tour.

More detail

A group can have several price lists, and their order decides which price a customer sees for a SKU that's in more than one. See Price list order.

Add your buyers to the group

Each customer belongs to one customer group. On Shopify, this is step 3 of the Setup checklist: see Add your first buyer. Give each buyer the group's tag as well as b2b if it isn't the Base group, for example b2b-trade.

On other platforms, you mark B2B customers in your platform's admin, such as the b2b label on Wix: see Other platforms. For every platform, see Assign customers to a customer group.

Check your prices allow for tax

Customers see exactly the price in their price list, before tax. Tax is added at the last step of checkout.

Shopify only

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings,Taxes and duties (opens in your Shopify admin in a new tab). If Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate is on and you use an automatic price list, raise its percentage to take the tax out too. Otherwise customers pay tax twice. See Tax-inclusive prices.

BigCommerce, Wix, WooCommerce, Magento only

SparkLayer uses your platform's tax rules. Check the limits for your platform in Set up tax on other platforms.

For VAT and tax-exempt customers, see the guide Get B2B tax and VAT right.

Test as a B2B customer

Sign in to your store as a buyer in the group and check the prices, payment methods and any minimum order.

Shopify only

Go to Orders,Place a test order. It creates a test customer with the b2b tag, gives them a price list and opens your store signed in as them. Test orders don't count towards your plan. See Try it out.

BigCommerce, Wix, WooCommerce, Magento only

Create a test customer in your platform, add them to the group as in step 4, then sign in to your store as them. See Test as a B2B customer.

Check it worked

Signed in as your test buyer:

To check one product's price in every list, search for its SKU at Pricing,Price editor (opens in your SparkLayer Dashboard in a new tab).

If something's not right

  • The buyer sees retail prices, or products say "Unavailable". Check their tag, their sync status and that the product is in a price list their group uses. See Customers can't see B2B prices.
  • A price isn't the one you expected. The SKU may be in an earlier price list on the group (see Price list order), or your store prices may include tax. See Prices are different from what you expect.
  • Tax is charged twice. Upload net prices, and make automatic lists allow for tax. See Tax is charged twice.
  • Some CSV rows were skipped. Check each SKU matches your store exactly and prices have no currency symbol. See Skipped rows.
