SparkLayer MCP
What it is
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard AI apps use to connect to other services. The SparkLayer MCP lets the AI app you already use work on your SparkLayer store from its own chat, with the same rules as Ask Sparkie.

What a connected app can do
| What it can do | |
|---|---|
| Read | List your stores and their live and test environments, read your store configuration, and read your price lists (with their SKU prices) and customer groups. |
| Propose | Prepare a new price list, or changes to one, such as new SKU prices. Prepare a new customer group, or changes to one, such as its price list or minimum order. |
| Apply | Apply a proposal you've approved. Only if you allow it when you connect the app. |
Anything else stays in the SparkLayer Dashboard. A connected app can't see orders, shipping or payment terms, search your products or customers, or delete price lists and customer groups.
Things to ask
- "Which of my customer groups don't have a minimum order?"
- "Compare my Trade and Key Accounts price lists and tell me which SKUs differ."
- "Create a price list that's 25% off retail for Gift Shops, on my test store."
- "Here's our ERP price export. Update the Trade price list with these SKU prices."
- "Set up a Distributors customer group with a $500 minimum order, using the EU Distributors price list."
Because the app does the work, you can hand it the jobs that take longest by hand, such as updating hundreds of SKU prices from a spreadsheet. It splits large updates into proposals of up to 500 SKU prices each.
How changes stay safe
A connected app follows the same rules as Ask Sparkie:
- Every change is a proposal. The app shows you what will change before anything is saved, and it can only apply exactly what the proposal showed.
- You choose what it can do. Leave Apply changes you approve off, and the app only prepares proposals for you to apply in Ask Sparkie.
- Live changes need your approval. Start on your test store to try things safely.
- Proposals expire after 24 hours, and you can apply up to 25 changes a day on each environment, across Ask Sparkie and every connected app.
- Everything is logged. The activity log shows each proposal and change, who approved it and which app made it.
See Review and apply changes for proposals, limits and undoing a change.
Connect an AI app
- In SparkLayer, go to Ask SparkLayer and click the clock icon, Activity and connections.
- Under Connected AI apps, click Connect next to the app.
- Tick the stores it can work on and choose what it can do, then click Allow.
- In the AI app, add the SparkLayer connector and sign in with your SparkLayer account.
You can disconnect an app at any time. See Activity and connected AI apps.
For developers
Building an integration? Connect the SparkLayer MCP to your coding assistant alongside the docs MCP server. The docs server tells it how the APIs work, and the SparkLayer MCP shows it your real price lists, customer groups and SKUs, so it maps your data correctly. The ready-made prompts already ask assistants to use it when it's connected.
The SparkLayer MCP has these tools:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
list_sites | Lists the stores you've allowed, with their live and test environments |
get_store_configuration | Reads a store's setup |
list_price_lists, get_price_list | Lists price lists, or reads one with its SKU prices |
list_customer_groups, get_customer_group | Lists customer groups, or reads one |
propose_create_price_list, propose_update_price_list | Prepares a new price list, or a change to one |
propose_create_customer_group, propose_update_customer_group | Prepares a new customer group, or a change to one |
apply_price_list_proposal, apply_customer_group_proposal | Applies a proposal you've approved |
Every call works on one store and environment. To apply a proposal, the app passes back the summary it showed you, so it can't apply anything different.
FAQs
