Move your existing wholesale customers onto SparkLayer
Applies toShopify
Customers already in Shopify become B2B customers through their tags, so there's nothing to recreate. You tag them, bring across anything stored on them, and tell them they can sign in.
Before you start
- Your price lists and customer groups set up. See Set up wholesale prices.
- A list of your trade customers and the group each belongs in.
- Their credit limits and terms, if they pay on account.
- Your previous wholesale app still installed, if you have one. SparkLayer can run alongside it while you test.
Move your customers
Tag your trade customers
In your Shopify admin, give each trade customer the b2b tag, plus their group's tag if it isn't the Base group, for example b2b-trade. You'll find each group's tag under its name at
SparkLayer Wholesale,Customers,Customer groups (in your Shopify admin).
Use no more than 2 B2B tags per customer, and check each has at least one complete address. See Tag existing customers in Shopify. Take the 1-minute tour.
Bring across their terms and prices
If customers have credit limits, net terms or their own price lists, these go in metafields on each customer. To fill them in for many customers at once, use Shopify's bulk editor, or an import app such as Matrixify if the values are already in a spreadsheet. See Fill in metafields for many at once.
For the values to enter, see Credit limits and net terms and Prices for one customer.
Check they've synced
Go to
SparkLayer Wholesale,Customers (in your Shopify admin) and check each customer is there, with the right group in the Group column. If a sync banner shows errors, click Show errors and fix those customers in Shopify. See Check a customer has synced. Take the 1-minute tour.
Import their order history
So customers see their previous orders in My Account, add an order metafield with the namespace sparklayer, key order_import and type boolean. Set it to true on each order you want to import, and check each order has the b2b tag.
Do this after SparkLayer is installed. For many orders, use Matrixify with our sample CSV template. See Import order history into SparkLayer.
Tell your customers they can sign in
Customers sign in at your store's login page, for example www.yourstore.com/account. If you use Legacy customer accounts, send each one Shopify's account invite first. Email them to say your B2B store is ready, starting with a small group. See Invite your first customers and our example welcome email.
More detail
To invite many customers at once, apps such as Matrixify and BAIS Bulk Account Invite can help. See Invite customers in bulk.
Retire your old wholesale app
Once you're happy with SparkLayer, uninstall your previous B2B app. If it changed your theme code, you can ask its developer to remove the changes, but you don't have to. See "What if I already use a wholesale app on my store?" in Shopify FAQs.
Old SparkLayer scripts
SparkLayer now adds a B2B Ordering app pixel to Settings,Customer events (opens in your Shopify admin in a new tab) when you install it. If an older SparkLayer install added scripts to your checkout or thank-you page, you can delete them once the pixel shows as connected: see Can I delete old SparkLayer scripts from Additional Scripts?
Check it worked
- Every customer is at
SparkLayer Wholesale,Customers (in your Shopify admin), in the right group. - Signed in as one of them, you see their trade prices.
- In My Account, their imported orders show in their order history, and Financials shows any credit limit and terms.
If something's not right
- Customer sync shows errors. Usually an incomplete address or a tag that doesn't match a group. See Customer sync shows errors.
- A customer isn't in the Customers list. See A customer isn't in the Customers list.
- SparkLayer doesn't appear when they sign in. Check their tags and address, and that you're testing on the right theme. See Widgets don't appear when a B2B customer signs in.
- Their old orders don't show. Check each order has the metafield set to
trueand theb2btag. See Import order history into SparkLayer.
