# Add B2B customers on Shopify

URL: https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/invite-customers

Make a customer a B2B customer on Shopify: tag customers you already have, or add a new one from scratch, so they see your trade prices when they sign in.

> **Quick summary**
>
> - A Shopify customer becomes a B2B customer when their customer record has the `b2b` tag. When they sign in to your store, SparkLayer shows them your trade prices.
> - **Customers you already have:** add the `b2b` tag in your Shopify admin, one at a time or many at once.
> - **New customers:** add them in your Shopify admin with the `b2b` tag, then let them know they can sign in.
> - Every B2B customer needs at least one complete address on their Shopify record, so they can get through checkout.

## How it works

SparkLayer reads your Shopify **customer tags**. A customer with the `b2b` tag gets your Base customer group's prices and rules. To put them in another [customer group](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/customer-groups.md), give them that group's tag as well, such as `b2b-trade`.

From Shopify customer to B2B customer:

1. **Tag them**: Add `b2b` (and their group's tag) to the customer in Shopify
2. **They sign in**: They sign in to your store with their email
3. **They see trade prices**: SparkLayer loads with their group's prices and rules

Find each group's tag under its name at **Customers > Groups** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/groups)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers > Customer groups** in the Shopify app, for example "Tag: b2b-trade".

- **The `b2b` tag** on every B2B customer, even if they're also in another group.
- **Their group's tag as well**, if they belong to a group other than Base, for example `b2b` and `b2b-trade`.
- **No more than 2 B2B tags.** `b2b` with `b2b-trade` is correct; `b2b` with `b2b-trade` and `b2b-vip` is not.
- **At least one complete address** on their Shopify record.

## Add a customer you already have

If the customer already has an account on your store, tag them:

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Customers** ([open in the Shopify admin](https://admin.shopify.com/customers)) and open the customer.
2. In the **Tags** box, type `b2b` and choose it, or add it as a new tag.
3. To put them in another group, add its tag too, for example `b2b-trade`.
4. Check they have a complete address, then click **Save**.

The next time they sign in to your store, they see your trade prices.

### Tag many customers at once

1. At **Customers** ([open in the Shopify admin](https://admin.shopify.com/customers)), tick the customers you want.
2. Click **More actions** > **Add tags**, enter `b2b` (and a group tag, if you use one) and click **Save**.

For a long list, you can also import a customer CSV with a **Tags** column in your Shopify admin. See Shopify's [customer import guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/import-export-customers).

## Add a new customer from scratch

To set up a customer who doesn't have an account on your store yet:

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Customers > Add customer** ([open in the Shopify admin](https://admin.shopify.com/customers/new)).
2. Enter their **First name**, **Last name** and **Email**.
3. Add their address, including the company name if they have one.
4. Under **Tags**, add `b2b`, and their group's tag if they're in another group.
5. Click **Save**.
6. Let them know they can sign in. How depends on your [customer accounts version](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/install.md#choose-your-customer-accounts-version):
   - **New customer accounts:** there's nothing to send from Shopify. They sign in on your store with their email and a one-time code. Send them a link to your store's sign-in page.
   - **Legacy customer accounts:** on the customer's page, click **Send account invite**. Shopify emails them a link to set a password.

## Let customers apply themselves

Rather than adding each customer yourself, you can let them apply for a trade account. A registration form collects their details, and you approve them by adding the tags. See [B2B registration and login](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/customisations/registration-and-login.md).

## Check it works

Sign in to your store as the customer, or use [Try it out](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/launching.md#place-a-test-order), which signs you in as a test B2B customer. You should see your trade prices and the SparkLayer cart.

## Troubleshooting

**The customer signs in but sees retail prices**

Check their Shopify record has the `b2b` tag, spelt exactly, and no more than 2 B2B tags. Then check SparkLayer is on your theme: see [Theme setup](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/theme-setup.md).

**The customer isn't in SparkLayer**

Customers that don't sync show in a banner at **Customers** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/list)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers** in the Shopify app. Click **Show errors** to see why. A missing address is the most common reason.

**The customer can't get through checkout**

Add a complete address to their Shopify record.
