# Set up wholesale prices for your trade customers

URL: https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/guides/set-up-wholesale-prices

Create a B2B price list, add your trade prices, assign it to a customer group and add your buyers, then sign in as a buyer to check the prices they see.

> **Quick summary**
>
> - You'll end up with a price list of trade prices, a customer group that uses it, and buyers who see those prices when they sign in.
> - Most stores finish the core steps in under 15 minutes. Allow longer if you're preparing a spreadsheet of exact prices.
> - Works on every plan and platform. The free Basic plan includes 3 price lists; Starter and above have unlimited price lists.

A buyer's prices come from a price list, and a customer group decides who sees it. This guide sets up both, then adds your buyers and checks what they see. For the ideas behind it, see [Key concepts](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/how-sparklayer-works.md#key-concepts).

## Before you start

- **SparkLayer installed on your store.** On Shopify, see [Install SparkLayer on Shopify](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/install.md). On other platforms, see [Platforms](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms.md).
- **A unique SKU on every product** you sell to B2B customers, and the product set to active. Prices are matched to products by SKU.
- **Your trade prices, or the rule for them**, for example 20% off your retail prices. A spreadsheet of prices by SKU is fine.
- **An email address you can sign in to**, to test as a buyer.

## Set it up yourself

### Step 1. Create a price list

This is step 1 of the Setup checklist: see [Set up a price list](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started.md#set-up-your-b2b-pricing). Give it a name your team will recognise, such as "Trade GBP", and pick its **Currency** with care: you can't change the **Handle** or **Currency** later. See [Create a price list](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing.md#create-a-price-list). [Take the 1-minute tour](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing?tour).

### Step 2. Add your trade prices

Choose how the list gets its prices:

| If your trade prices are… | Do this |
| --- | --- |
| A set percentage off retail | Tick **Enable automatic pricing**, choose a **Pricing source** and enter the percentage. See [Set up automatic pricing](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing.md#set-up-automatic-pricing). |
| Exact prices in a spreadsheet | Save it as a CSV file with **SKU** and **Price** columns, then click **Upload** next to the list. See [Upload prices by CSV](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/csv-upload.md). |

Upload prices without tax. SparkLayer shows prices net and adds tax at checkout: see [step 5](#check-your-prices-allow-for-tax).

### Step 3. Assign the price list to a customer group

This is step 2 of the Setup checklist: see [Assign a price list to a customer group](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started.md#set-up-your-customer-groups). To give every B2B customer these prices, use the **Base customer group**. To give them to some customers only, create a customer group for them. See [Assign price lists](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/customer-groups.md#assign-price-lists). [Take the 1-minute tour](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/customer-groups?tour).

**More detail**

A group can have several price lists, and their order decides which price a customer sees for a SKU that's in more than one. See [Price list order](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing.md#price-list-order).

### Step 4. Add your buyers to the group

Each customer belongs to one customer group. On Shopify, this is step 3 of the Setup checklist: see [Add your first buyer](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started.md#add-your-b2b-customers). Give each buyer the group's tag as well as `b2b` if it isn't the Base group, for example `b2b-trade`.

On other platforms, you mark B2B customers in your platform's admin, such as the `b2b` label on Wix: see [Other platforms](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started.md#other-platforms). For every platform, see [Assign customers to a customer group](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/add-customers-to-a-group.md#assign-customers-to-a-customer-group).

### Step 5. Check your prices allow for tax

Customers see exactly the price in their price list, before tax. Tax is added at the last step of checkout.

**Shopify only:**

In your Shopify admin, go to **Settings > Taxes and duties** ([open in the Shopify admin](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/taxes)). If **Include sales tax in product price and shipping rate** is on and you use an automatic price list, raise its percentage to take the tax out too. Otherwise customers pay tax twice. See [Tax-inclusive prices](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing.md#tax-inclusive-prices).

**BigCommerce and Wix and WooCommerce and Magento only:**

SparkLayer uses your platform's tax rules. Check the limits for your platform in [Set up tax on other platforms](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/ordering/tax-and-shipping.md#set-up-tax-on-other-platforms).

For VAT and tax-exempt customers, see the guide [Get B2B tax and VAT right](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/guides/tax-and-vat.md).

### Step 6. Test as a B2B customer

Sign in to your store as a buyer in the group and check the prices, payment methods and any minimum order.

**Shopify only:**

Go to **Orders > Place a test order** in the SparkLayer Dashboard, or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Try it out** in the Shopify app. It creates a test customer with the `b2b` tag, gives them a price list and opens your store signed in as them. Test orders don't count towards your plan. See [Try it out](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/launching.md#place-a-test-order).

**BigCommerce and Wix and WooCommerce and Magento only:**

Create a test customer in your platform, add them to the group as in step 4, then sign in to your store as them. See [Test as a B2B customer](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/add-customers-to-a-group.md#test-as-a-b2b-customer).

## Check it worked

Signed in as your test buyer:

- **Product pages show the price list's price**, for example $7.99 for a SKU listed at 7.99.
- **The cart shows the same prices**, with tax added as its own line on **Review & Pay**.
- **The buyer shows in the right group** at **Customers** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/list)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers** in the Shopify app, in the **Group** column.

To check one product's price in every list, search for its SKU at **Pricing > Price editor** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/pricing/editor)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Pricing > Price editor** in the Shopify app.

## If something's not right

- **The buyer sees retail prices, or products say "Unavailable".** Check their tag, their sync status and that the product is in a price list their group uses. See [Customers can't see B2B prices](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#customers-cant-see-b2b-prices-or-products-say-unavailable).
- **A price isn't the one you expected.** The SKU may be in an earlier price list on the group (see [Price list order](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/managing-pricing.md#price-list-order)), or your store prices may include tax. See [Prices are different from what you expect](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#prices-are-different-from-what-you-expect).
- **Tax is charged twice.** Upload net prices, and make automatic lists allow for tax. See [Tax is charged twice](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#tax-is-charged-twice).
- **Some CSV rows were skipped.** Check each SKU matches your store exactly and prices have no currency symbol. See [Skipped rows](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/csv-upload.md#skipped-rows).
