# Move your existing wholesale customers onto SparkLayer

URL: https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/guides/move-existing-customers
Applies to: Shopify

Bring the trade customers already in your Shopify store onto SparkLayer: tag them into groups, import their terms and order history, then ask them to sign in.

> **Quick summary**
>
> - You'll end up with your existing trade customers in the right customer groups, with their payment terms and past orders, ready to sign in and order.
> - Allow an hour or two, depending on how many customers you have. A bulk import app saves time for large lists.
> - Customer groups and customer-specific pricing are on every plan. Everything in this guide is for Shopify.

Customers already in Shopify become B2B customers through their tags, so there's nothing to recreate. You tag them, bring across anything stored on them, and tell them they can sign in.

## Before you start

- **Your price lists and customer groups set up.** See [Set up wholesale prices](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/guides/set-up-wholesale-prices.md).
- **A list of your trade customers** and the group each belongs in.
- **Their credit limits and terms**, if they pay on account.
- **Your previous wholesale app still installed**, if you have one. SparkLayer can run alongside it while you test.

## Move your customers

### Step 1. Tag your trade customers

In your Shopify admin, give each trade customer the `b2b` tag, plus their group's tag if it isn't the Base group, for example `b2b-trade`. You'll find each group's tag under its name at **Customers > Groups** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/groups)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers > Customer groups** in the Shopify app.

Use no more than 2 B2B tags per customer, and check each has at least one complete address. See [Tag existing customers in Shopify](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/install.md#tag-your-customers-in-shopify). [Take the 1-minute tour](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/customer-groups?tour).

### Step 2. Bring across their terms and prices

If customers have credit limits, net terms or their own price lists, these go in [metafields](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/metafields.md) on each customer. To fill them in for many customers at once, use Shopify's bulk editor, or an import app such as Matrixify if the values are already in a spreadsheet. See [Fill in metafields for many at once](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/metafields.md#import-metafields-in-bulk).

For the values to enter, see [Credit limits and net terms](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/ordering/credit-net-terms-and-invoicing.md#what-to-enter) and [Prices for one customer](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/pricing/customer-pricing.md).

### Step 3. Check they've synced

Go to **Customers** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/list)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers** in the Shopify app and check each customer is there, with the right group in the **Group** column. If a sync banner shows errors, click **Show errors** and fix those customers in Shopify. See [Check a customer has synced](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/add-customers-to-a-group.md#check-a-customer-has-synced). [Take the 1-minute tour](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/customers/managing-customers?tour).

### Step 4. Import their order history

So customers see their previous orders in My Account, add an order metafield with the namespace `sparklayer`, key `order_import` and type `boolean`. Set it to `true` on each order you want to import, and check each order has the `b2b` tag.

Do this after SparkLayer is installed. For many orders, use Matrixify with our sample CSV template. See [Import order history into SparkLayer](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/metafields.md#import-order-history-into-sparklayer).

### Step 5. Tell your customers they can sign in

Customers sign in at your store's login page, for example `www.yourstore.com/account`. If you use Legacy customer accounts, send each one Shopify's account invite first. Email them to say your B2B store is ready, starting with a small group. See [Invite your first customers](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/launching.md#invite-your-first-customers) and our [example welcome email](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/launching.md#send-a-welcome-email).

**More detail**

To invite many customers at once, apps such as Matrixify and BAIS Bulk Account Invite can help. See [Invite customers in bulk](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/get-started/launching.md#invite-customers-in-bulk).

### Step 6. Retire your old wholesale app

Once you're happy with SparkLayer, uninstall your previous B2B app. If it changed your theme code, you can ask its developer to remove the changes, but you don't have to. See "What if I already use a wholesale app on my store?" in [Shopify FAQs](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/faqs.md#theme-and-storefront).

**Old SparkLayer scripts**

SparkLayer now adds a **B2B Ordering** app pixel to **Settings > Customer events** ([open in the Shopify admin](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/customer_events)) when you install it. If an older SparkLayer install added scripts to your checkout or thank-you page, you can delete them once the pixel shows as connected: see [Can I delete old SparkLayer scripts from Additional Scripts?](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/faqs.md#can-i-delete-old-sparklayer-scripts-from-additional-scripts)

## Check it worked

- **Every customer is at** **Customers** in the SparkLayer Dashboard ([open](https://app.sparklayer.io/customers/list)), or **SparkLayer Wholesale > Customers** in the Shopify app, in the right group.
- **Signed in as one of them,** you see their trade prices.
- **In My Account,** their imported orders show in their order history, and **Financials** shows any credit limit and terms.

## If something's not right

- **Customer sync shows errors.** Usually an incomplete address or a tag that doesn't match a group. See [Customer sync shows errors](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#the-customer-data-sync-shows-errors).
- **A customer isn't in the Customers list.** See [A customer isn't in the Customers list](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#the-customer-data-sync-says-this-customer-id-cannot-be-found).
- **SparkLayer doesn't appear when they sign in.** Check their tags and address, and that you're testing on the right theme. See [Widgets don't appear when a B2B customer signs in](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/troubleshooting.md#widgets-dont-appear-when-a-b2b-customer-signs-in).
- **Their old orders don't show.** Check each order has the metafield set to `true` and the `b2b` tag. See [Import order history into SparkLayer](https://docs.sparklayer.io/help/platforms/shopify/metafields.md#import-order-history-into-sparklayer).
