## Introduction

The *SparkLayer Backend* is essentially the mechanism whereby SparkLayer connects your B2B data behind the scenes. If you're using the [SparkLayer API](docId\:LhKqO8T7-A0HaRgVYFgtT), you can connect your backend systems and automatically send your B2B data to SparkLayer. Alternatively, you can use the manual import tools within the [Dashboard](docId\:nzsx6U_DAWtzVzSehf4oR) to configure your B2B data.

## Understanding how SparkLayer connects

If we look at your *current* system architecture, it's likely that your eCommerce platform will be doing the following: 

- Talking directly to your backend systems (e.g. ERP, CRM, or iPaaS) to synchronise key data such as product information, customer data, order details
- Providing the interface (i.e. a storefront) for retail customers to browse and place orders from
